Meerkat Press to publish new YA fantasy by Leander Watts

Published by:

Meerkat Press is excited to announce the acquisition of worldwide English rights to Meet Me in the Strange, a contemporary YA fantasy by Leander Watts, from Christopher Schelling at Selectric Artists. The book is scheduled for release in March 2018.

In Meet Me in the Strange, Davi tries to help his new friend, Anna Z, escape a cruel and controlling brother, and the teens end up running away to follow the tour of their rock idol, the otherworldly Django Conn. The story is set in a weird and wonderful retro-futuristic city of glam-girls and glister-boys and a strange phenomenon that Anna Z calls the “Alien Drift.”

An avid musician, Leander Watts has played and sung for decades in a wide variety of bands. His interests range from garage rock to skronky jazz, from baroque organ to Appalachian gospel. The first rock concert he attended was David Bowie on the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. He teaches writing and literature at the State University of New York at Geneseo (his alma mater). Leander Watts is the author of Stonecutter, Wild Ride to Heaven, Ten Thousand Charms, and Beautiful City of the Dead.

Meerkat Press to publish Smoke City by Keith Rosson

Published by:

Tricia Reeks, publisher at Meerkat Press, announced the acquisition of worldwide English language rights to Keith Rosson’s novel, Smoke City, from Christopher Schelling of Selectric Artists. This is the second of Keith’s books to be published by Meerkat and is set to release in January 2018.

In Smoke City, Marvin Deitz—record store owner, hospital volunteer, remorseful reincarnation of Joan of Arc’s executioner—heads to Los Angeles to ask forgiveness from a woman claiming to be Joan; he’s picked up hitchhiking by Mike Vale, a self-destructive alcoholic painter traveling to his ex-wife’s funeral, and as they move through a California landscape populated with “smokes” (ghostly apparitions that’ve inexplicably begun appearing throughout the southwestern US), each seeks absolution in their own way.

“Keith’s book is magical realism at its finest,” said Reeks, “with such deep and vivid characters, I found it impossible to put the book down.”

“It’s great to see that Meerkat’s continuing their trajectory of publishing genre-blurring work,” said Rosson, “and I’m very pleased that this novel is going to get released out into the world.”

Retrograde by Kat Hausler coming September 2017

Published by:

Meerkat Press is excited to announce we’ll be publishing Kat Hausler’s delightfully disturbing novel Retrograde in September 2017. The book explores a darker side of relationships—the barriers couples put up between each other, the lies they need to believe in, and the ones they can never forget.

About Retrograde

On a warm summer day in Berlin, Helena Schmidt is hit by a truck while crossing the street. She awakens to the loving face of her husband Joachim. In addition to a few broken bones, she realizes she can’t remember anything about the accident or even the last few years leading up to it. Retrograde amnesia, the doctors call it and assure her that with time, she should regain her memory. At loose ends after another botched relationship, Joachim Schmidt doesn’t intend to lie to his estranged wife, Helena. But when he realizes that she doesn’t remember their separation, he can’t bring himself to tell her. So he does what any rational man would do: he takes her home and pretends they were never apart. As the lies accumulate, Helena senses something isn’t quite right—that her husband is hiding something. When the outside world encroaches, Helena must face an unsettling truth and decide what the past will mean for their future.

About Kat Hausler

Originally from Virginia, Kat Hausler is a graduate of New York University and holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she was the recipient of a Baumeister Fellowship. Her work has been published by 34th Parallel, Inkspill Magazine, All Things That Matter Press, Rozlyn Press, and BlazeVOX. Her novel Retrograde, which will be published by Meerkat Press in September 2017, was long-listed for the Mslexia Novel Competition. She works as a translator in Berlin.

Two Fantasy Novels Coming in 2017

Published by:

We are super excited to announce that we’ve recently signed two wonderful fantasy novels, both of which will be published in 2017.

The first is an urban fantasy, The Year of the Knife, by G D Penman. Sully is an agent of the British Empire who is not afraid to use her magic skills to crack a case. But she may need more than that to track a serial killer across New Amsterdam and the American colonies, since the killer is controlling its victims’ bodies with a powerful magic of its own.

The second is an epic fantasy by Rebecca Gomez Farrell, titled Wings Unseen. The Meduan and Lanserim ways of life are as compatible as oil and water. But when an invisible threat consumes both countries, leaving husks of human skin in its wake, Lansera’s Prince Janto and his fiancé, Serra, must learn to work together with Vesperi, a Meduan who possesses the only weapon that can save them.

ABOUT G D PENMAN

gdpenmanG D Penman writes Speculative Fiction. He lives in Scotland with his partner and children, some of whom are human. He is a firm believer in the axiom that any story is made better by dragons. His beard has won an award. If you have ever read a story with Kaiju and queer people, it was probably one of his. In those few precious moments that he isn’t parenting or writing he likes to watch cartoons, play video and tabletop games, read more books than are entirely feasible and continue his quest to eat the flesh of every living species.
